I’m planning a trip

Plan the trip you want—before the best options disappear

The first decisions are shared by every owner. Once you understand the strategy, choose the example that fits the way you travel. Then return to the same practical reservation steps.

You already know what you own. Now it is time to turn that ownership into a great vacation. Start with the trip that matters most, choose your timing with purpose, and keep the calendar dates that protect your reservation in view.

The shared strategy

Plan early—REALLY early

For Marriott Vacation Club, “early” is not six months out. Start planning your major trip for the upcoming use year more than a year ahead—preferably up to 18 months before you want to check in.
Choose the major trip first.Decide where you want to go and the villa size you need. Those decisions are usually less flexible than the date.
Build with the points left over.Use remaining points for additional vacations in priority order, and borrow only when the most important trip warrants it.
Leave room for opportunity.Keep some flexibility for getaways, great airfare, or a genuinely good Abound Escape. Bank unused points when appropriate.

Choose your “when” strategy

The strategy to understand as you decide WHEN to go

Points and Deeded Weeks owners use different calendars to choose the best timing for their ownership. Follow the real-world example that matches the way you travel, then return here for the shared reservation steps.

Then, both owners do the same thing

Once you’ve decided where and when to go, make the reservation

You did the planning. Now it is time to take the leap and secure the trip.

Reserve with confidence

Take the leap—use the Costco Rule

When special availability appears, make the reservation. Do not lose a great trip while you overthink every detail. Reserve it, work through the logistics, and decide before the applicable cancellation deadline.

“Make the reservation, then figure out if you can make it work.”
1. See itYou spot a rare availability or destination that makes you pause and think, “Maybe.”
2. Reserve itSecure the opportunity while it is still available instead of waiting for every detail to be perfect.
3. Decide before the deadlineWork through the schedule and logistics, then keep it—or cancel by the applicable deadline if it does not fit.

You’ll be glad you did.

After you reserve

Calendar the dates that protect it

Once the reservation is made, record its location, villa type, points used, and confirmation number. Then calendar the dates that protect the value of the trip you just secured.

First Day to ReserveUse your actual First Day to Reserve—not a generic 12–13-month estimate. It can vary by Owner Benefit Level, resort brand, ownership type, and whether you own Points or a Deeded Week.
Your 60-day windowPut a reminder 4–5 days before this date. Check with your travel party, verify schedules, and decide whether you are truly taking the trip before a no-penalty cancellation deadline passes.
